DU baseball splits pair to open series at Hawaii Pacific

KANEOHE, Hawaii - The Drury Panthers opened play in Hawaii with a split at Hawaii Pacific, winning the opener 7-3 before falling in the nightcap 16-8.

In the opener Pacific scored runs in each of the second and third innings for an early 2-0 edge.  After three scoreless innings, Drury scored four runs on three hits in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead.  Brant Schaffitzel had a two RBI single to put the Panthers on top.

The Panthers finished off the Sharks by scoring three runs on four hits in the eighth inning.  An Ethan Owens RBI single and a two RBI triple by DJ McNew did the damage.  Pacific added a solo shot in the ninth to make it a 7-3 final

Schaffitzel and Riley Herron each finished 2-for-4 to pace the Panthers who finished with 10 hits.  Tom Tewes (1-1) earned the win and had seven K's in six innings of action.

In the nightcap, the Sharks scored four runs in the opening frame which included a two run homer.  Hawaii Pacific followed up with a two run shot in the next inning and a sacrifice fly in the third frame to jump out to a quick 7-0 margin.

Drury struck for five runs on three hits and an error in the fifth, highlighted by a two RBI single from Nikko Calabro to cut the Sharks lead to 7-5.  A sacrifice fly made it 8-5 after four innings but Drury stayed to within two runs on a wild pitch in the Panther fifth that allowed Jacob Mitchell to cross.  The Sharks put a seven spot on the board in the bottom of the fifth to make it 15-6.

Drury chipped away in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles from Jackson Dierenfeldt and Wes Collins to cut it to 15-8, but could draw no closer as Pacific added their final run in the sixth for a 16-8 final.

Mitchell went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI in the Panthers 10 hit outing.

The two teams will play games three and four of the five game series on Satuday with first pitch set for 6 and 9 p.m. (CST).
