ST. LOUIS, Mo.– Maryville caught fire early in the fifth set in a 3-2 win over Drury on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Panthers fell to 6-8 and 0-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints went to 8-6 and 3-1 in the league.
The first three sets were decided by late runs. Maryville won seven of the last 10 points in the opening set for a 25-21 win. After trailing 18-17 in the second, Drury reeled off seven straight points to take control and even the match with a 25-22 victory in the second set. The third set was tied 19-19, then a Maryville run saw the Saints go up 2-1 with a 25-21 win in the third.
The Panthers caught fire in the fourth and forced a fifth set with a 25-18 win, but the Saints jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the final set and never looked back to win 15-8.
Abby Renshaw had 11 kills to lead Drury.
Kayli Duncan added 10 kills and nine block assists for the Panthers, while
Lauren Tyler put up 35 assists, and
Kim Quinit contributed 20 digs.
Makenna Brauman led a balanced Maryville attack with 11 kills and Ella Brinkmann had 10 kills, 13 digs and five service aces.
It was the third time in four conference games the Panthers have gone to five sets, and it was Maryville's third straight five-set contest.
Drury is back at home on Friday when they host Truman State at 6 pm in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
