Panthers take down UINDY in second round of NCAA-II tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Drury men's tennis team downed the NCAA-II Midwest Region's second seeded team and avenged their loss in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament championship last week with a 5-2 win at 17th ranked Indianapolis on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA-II national championship tournament.
 
The Panthers, ranked 18th in the nation, improved to 20-3 and will advance to the round of 16 on May 9 in Altamonte Springs, Florida where they will play Queens (NY), who advanced out of the East Region.
 
The Greyhounds ended their season with a 16-5 record. 
 
Drury won two of the three doubles matches getting a win from Maximillian Hepp and Sebastien Amato over Arklon Huertas del Pino and Andrea Morlet, 8-3, and Sacha Mourier and Nico Sigloch defeated UINDY's Christoph Drechsler and Magnus Mueller 9-7.
 
The Panthers took a 3-1 lead when Mourier won his singles match-up against Marco Razo 6-1, 7-6. Following Drury's win by Sigloch, 6-2, 7-6 over Morlet, the Panthers clinched the second round win as Sebastien Amato went three sets to defeat Nils Hoffacker 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Six days earlier, Indianapolis blanked Drury winning 5-0 to take the GLVC tournament title in St. Louis. The Greyhounds also ended the Panthers season last year in the second round of the national tournament in Indianapolis with a 5-0 win.
 
Drury will face Queens at 11 a.m. (central) on May 9 in the NCAA-II round of 16. The Knights are 15-5 and ranked 30th in the latest NCAA-II / ITA national poll. The next four rounds of the NCAA-II tournament will be played at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida. It marks Drury's third trip to the Sweet Sixteen in four years and their 16th trip there since 1999.
 
The Drury women's team opens play in the NCAA-II Midwest Region on Monday in Midland, Michigan when they take on Missouri-St. Louis.
