ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – In the NCAA-II National Championship Quarterfinals, the Drury men's tennis team fell 5-1 to second ranked Barry (Fla.) at Sanlando Park Wednesday.
The Panthers, ranked 18
th in the nation, finished the season with a 21-4 record while Barry improved to 25-1. This marked the first time since 2009 that the Panther men had reached the National Quarterfinals, and their 10th time in the program's history.
Barry opened the match with a pair of 8-6 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Drury got past the Buccaneers 9-7 at No. 3 doubles, with
Paul Porcher and
Nico Hadeler beating Nico Dreer and Fernando Tous.
Barry proved too much to handle, and rattled off three straight wins to claim the match. Carlos Gomez, ranked 13
th in the nation, earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3, to push the Buccaneers lead to 3-1. Pierre Montrieul, ranked 26
th nationally, then earned a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over
Sebastien Amato at No. 2. 47
th-ranked Nico Dreer followed up for a 6-2, 6-1 win over Porcher at No 4, sealing the match, and helping Barry to advance to the National semifinals.
