ST. LOUIS, Mo.– It took a third set in the number four singles match, but Drury edged Maryville 5-4 on Friday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis and started their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule with a win.
The Panthers, ranked 18th in NCAA-II, improved to 11-3 and 1-0 in the GLVC. Maryville fell to 3-5 and 0-1 in the conference.
Drury won two of their three doubles matches, and Nico Hadeler gave the Panthers a point in their lead singles position with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Louis Glaves. Drury clinched the match with Lukas Stierling's win. The freshman from Santiago, Chile got past Fernando Orea in three sets, 6-3, 2-6 and 7-6.
The win extended the Panthers winning streak in the GLVC regular season to 72 games. They have never lost in conference play during the regular season since joining the league 12 years ago.
Drury puts their streak on the line tomorrow when they play at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The match starts at 11 a.m. on the UMSL campus.
