SPRINGFIELD, Mo. —The Drury women's tennis team edged out Cameron 4-3 to win their season opener Friday evening at Cooper Tennis Complex.
Kseniia Eremina won the deciding match point at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-3 over Julianne Garcia.
Drury opened the match by posting doubles wins of 6-4 and 6-3 at the top two doubles positions over the Aggies. Cameron did fight back to within a point by claiming wins at the top three spots in their singles lineup. Drury was tough at the bottom of their lineup with
Alma Abazi winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and
Clara Kuehnle winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5.
"We had a lot of new players out on the courts for us this year, a lot of youth, "said Drury head coach
Jarrod Smith. "It was an extremely long and competitive night that lasted past midnight. It took every bit of fight that we had. It's a great accomplishment to get a victory over a nationally ranked program in the first match of the year. I'm extremely proud of shaking off the nerves and overcoming the pressure."
On February 9th, Drury will play host to Washburn at Cooper Tennis Complex at 10:15 a.m.
