The Drury Dozen is an annual list of our favorite moments of the year from Drury Athletics. The list is not necessarily the most significant events, but the special games and moments that we'll always associate with 2019-20.
Â
The most significant moment, obviously, came on Mar. 11 when the sports world stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That halt robbed us of games and accomplishments that would have likely taken up several spots on this list.Â
Â
We can take pride in the fact, however, that even though the year was cut short, what happened between Sept. 1, 2019, and Mar. 10, 2020, provided so many great moments in a variety of sports that it was still difficult to trim the list to just 12.Â
Â
We'll provide honorable mention selections later in the countdown, but, for now, here is our third entry from 2019-20:Â
Â
#9 – Lady Panthers rally for win at Bellarmine
Â
Jan. 25, 2020 – Louisville, Ky.
The storylines were endless going into this game…
Â
- The Lady Panthers game at Bellarmine was the first and only meeting of the season between the two rivals and served as the rematch of the 2018 GLVC tournament championship game.
- Drury head coach Molly Miller gave birth to her second child less than 48 hours before tipoff but flew in from Springfield to be on the bench. Amy Eagan, DU's assistant at the time and now head coach for the program, led the squad that afternoon.
- Knights Hall was the site of Drury's last regular season loss - nearly two years to the day from this match-up.
Â
As for the game itself, there was plenty of drama as the Lady Panthers found themselves behind in the fourth quarter for one of the few times in 2019-20.
Â
Trailing 69-67 with less than three minutes remaining, Drury found another gear and closed out the game with a 15-5 run to win 82-74.
Hailey Diestelkamp had eight of those final 15 points as Drury improved to 19-0, 10-0 in the GLVC and won their 56
th straight regular season game.
Â
This would also be a game that illustrated why Diestelkamp was the national Player of the Year. It wasn't just her numbers in the game; she wouldn't let her team lose (especially this one). The senior finished with 37 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and four steals and made big play, after big play down the stretch.
