VALLEY PARK, Mo.— The Drury women's bowling team completed their sixth year of intercollegiate competition at the NCAA level last weekend in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament in Valley Park, Missouri.
The Panthers, seeded fifth in the seven-team field, opened losing a best-of-three series to number four Lewis 2-0. Drury lost in the Tradition match play 1002-839, then lost in best-of-seven Baker match play 4-1.
"Overall, it was a poor performance on our part," said Drury head coach Mitch McGee. "We weren't making good shots and our spare shooting was extremely subpar."
The following day, Drury was eliminated by third-seeded Central Missouri 2-1. The Panthers lost the Traditional match 1095-807 but then won the Baker match in 4-1 to force a deciding third match. Drury won the opening game of Baker match play, 234-170, but the Jennies rebounded to win the next four to stay alive in the tournament.
"After that first match, the girls rebounded extremely well and finally found their footing," said McGee. "Shot-making was much better overall, and we managed to fight our way back to a 1-1, forcing the best-of-7 baker match against them. We got off to a quick start in that match but couldn't keep the momentum going throughout."
Central Missouri advanced to the GLVC Finals but fell to number one seed McKendree, also the number one ranked team in the NCAA, 2-0 in the championship round.
