SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury's season-opening match against Missouri State came down to both team's top number one singles players in a three-set marathon decided by a tie-breaker, but the Bears managed to squeak past the Panthers 4-3 on Friday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
With the match tied at 3-3, Drury's
Nastasia Jedrychowski battled Diana Cabrera through three sets and for more than three hours before Cabrera clinched the win for the Bears 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Missouri State took a 1-0 lead after doubles in three tightly contested matches. Maria Espejo and Clara Kuehlne won 6-3 to give the Panthers an early advantage in doubles, but the Bears won the number two match 6-4, and edged Drury 7-5 in the number one doubles match-up.
Leading the match 3-1, Drury rallied with a win by
Clara Kuehnle, 7-6, 6-2 over Juliette Robinson; then Ewe Sandberger brought the Panthers back from the brink of a Missouri State clinching point as she defeated Mary Houston 3-6, 7-6, 6-1.
The match then came down to Jedrychowski-Cabrera, each team's top singles player, and Cabrera squeaked out a tie-breaker in the third set to give her team the win.
Missouri State went to 1-1, while the Panthers took the loss in their season opener.
The Panthers are back on the indoor courts of the Cooper Tennis Complex tomorrow as they host William Woods at 1 pm.
