Samberger reaches ITA Midwest Regional quarterfinals; doubles team of Samberger-Abazi reach quarterfinals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Drury women's tennis produced strong performances at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, last weekend.
 
Drury's doubles team of Ewa Samberger and Alma Abazi advanced to the Flight A quarterfinals. The duo won their opening round match in a tie-breaker 7-6 (8-6) over Vasileia Griva and Taylor Barrett from Grand Valley State. Samberger and Abazi then defeated Sofia Valderino and Marrina Magai from Rockhurst, 6-2. The two were edged in a tie-breaker in the quarterfinal round by Billur Gonhsen and Carolina Velazquez from Maryville, 7-6 (7-4).
 
Samberger also advanced to the quarterfinals in the Flight A singles bracket. The junior from Poland went 3-1 last weekend, posting a win in the first round over Grace Eland from Michigan Tech, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Samberger then took down Ane Donnhauser out of Hillsdale, 6-3, 6-4. Her third-round match went to a tie-breaker as she advanced with a 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 18-16 win over Valentine Colin from Indianapolis. Samberger's run ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Ana Hellweb of Indianapolis.
 
Newcomer Antanina Novik reached the Flight B singles quarterfinals. The freshman from Belarus advanced with an injury default in the opening round. She won her second round match, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 over Maria Ferrer from Ferris State, then took down Maria Chacon of Rockhurst, 7-6, 6-0. Novik had to withdraw in the quarterfinals due to injury.
 
The Drury men's tennis team heads the ITA Midwest Regionals, Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
