SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Vice President and Director of Athletics,
Nyla Milleson, announces Dr.
Terry Dean as the new women's triathlon head coach, Drury's fourth head coach in program history.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Dean to our Drury family," commented Milleson, "Not only does he have experience in the triathlon world, but also in higher education. Our triathlon team looks to build on their past success both competitively and academically."
Dr.
Terry Dean will take over for David Winton as head coach for women's triathlon. Dean joins the Panthers after numerous experiences in the field, serving as an independent triathlon and running coach, as well as providing race management services for clients at Racine Management since 2018.
Dean comes from an extensive background in triathlon. He qualified and finished the Ironman World Championship in 2023 and earned bronze-level All-World Athlete honors from Ironman in 2025. Dean is a five-time full Ironman finisher, a 10+ time USA Triathlon National Championship qualifier, and has completed over 70 triathlons in his athletic career.
"I'm excited to join Drury and continue the legacy of excellence in triathlon that has been built here," stated head coach Dean. " We have all the pieces in place – dedicated athletes, great facilities, committed supporters, and a university that believes in our sport – to continue to grow as a recognized leader in women's triathlon and a perennial championship contender."
Before coming to Drury, Dean was also Associate Dean at Shippensburg University, where he shared responsibility in managing the operation of the college, consisting of 19 departments with 160 faculty and 2,200 students.
Dean earned his Doctorate of Philosophy, specializing in Theatre History, Theory, and Dramatic Literature, from Indiana University. This comes after receiving a Master of Arts in Philosophy from Temple University and a Bachelor of Science with Honors, concentrating in Theatre Arts and Philosophy, from Bradley University.
The Maquoketa, Iowa, native began his athletic career as a tennis player, qualifying for the state tournament in doubles during his high school years. Dean went on to play at Bradley University, earning regional junior singles and doubles championships.
