Mike Nwelue scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead No. 14 Drury to an 84-60 victory over Central Christian in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
Cameron Adams and
Kameron Bundy added 16 points each for the Panthers, who led 41-30 at the half. Drury was clinging to an 11-8 lead five minutes in before putting together an 11-1 run over the next five minutes to take a 22-9 advantage on a 3-pointer by
Ben Fisher with 9:54 to go in the half.
An 11-2 surge to start the second half pushed the lead to 20 points with 14:23 to go after a jumper from
Lucciano Gamiz, and the Tigers got no closer than 17 points from there.
The Panthers hit 60 percent of their shots for the contest (33 of 55), including an 8-for-11 effort by Nwelue. Drury was 7-for-17 from 3-point range, with
Drake Patterson making three of his five attempts in finishing with nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
Bundyhad a team-high seven of Drury's 21 assists. Freshman guard
Trevor Clay picked up five points and four assists as well as a steal in 18 minutes of playing time, while junior
John Caraballo and freshman
Jerrod Harmon saw their first action of the season after battling injuries to this point.
Michael Gholston and Alonzo Stafford had 17 points each for Central Christian, an NAIA member that has a 7-2 overall mark but played the DU contest as an exhibition.
Drury improved to 5-1 overall heading into its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Saturday at Missouri S&T, with a 7:30 tipoff in Rolla.
