Baseball Panthers Rally Past Southwest Baptist 4-3 Tuesday At Meador

Drury used a three-run sixth inning, keyed by a two-run single from John Goodrich, to rally past Southwest Baptist 4-3 in their non-conference baseball matchup Tuesday afternoon at Meador Park.

Freshman right-hander Austin Simms (1-0) got the victory for the Panthers (6-7), allowing nine hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one in his seven innings of work. Freshman Matthew Tipton worked the eighth, and senior Bolivar native Gage Jacobs closed the door in the ninth for his third save.

Drury took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Bobby Lang doubled and came around to score on a Dallas Williams RBI single.

But SBU (6-12) countered with three runs off Sims in the fifth, including a two-run single by Christian Binger, to grab a 3-1 advantage.

The Panthes answered with three in the sixth. Lang walked and moved to third on an infield single by Williams. After Spencer Wilmes walked to load the bases, Goodrich lined a single to center to plate two and tie it at 3-apiece. Jacob Green brought home the third run with an infield single for the 4-3 DU lead.

Luke Tewes and Williams had three hits each to lead the Panthers' 12-hit attack, while Goodrich finished with a pair of hits to go with his two RBIs.

The Panthers will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend with doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday (noon starts) at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind.
