The Drury offense came alive for a combined 18 runs and 25 hits, sweeping a Sunday doubleheader from Maryville to take three of four games in the Great Lakes Valley Conference series at Meador Park.
Dallas Williams homered and
Ryan Colombo gave the Panthers a complete-game effort on the mound as Drury won the opener 9-3.
In the series finale, the Panthers bult a lead, watched Maryville rally, then put it away for good with a late flurry in a 9-7 triumph over the Saints. Drury comes out of the weekend with an 11-9-1 overall record and 7-4-1 in the GLVC, while the Saints fell to 10-15 and 3-9.
"I was glad we could come away with the series," Drury coach
Scott Nasby said. "We gave our pitchers some runs to work with and that gives our young staff confidence."
In Sunday's seven-inning opener, the Panthers broke it open with three runs each in the third and fourth innings to grab a 7-1 lead for all the cushion Colombo would need on the mound, as the sophomore right-hander moved to 2-1 on the season by allowing eight hits and three runs in the complete-game effort.
Conner Wilson had a run-scoring single and
Spencer Wilmes drove home two with a single in the three-run third, while a solo homer from Williams and an RBI double from
Luke Tewes highlighted the three runs in the fourth.
Tewes, Wilson and
Bobby Lang had two hits each for the Panthers, while Williams and Wilson drove in two apiece. Lang scored three times for DU, which out-hit the Saints 10-8 in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Panthers again were staked to an early lead, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first, including RBI singles from Tewes and
Tyler Arthur.
Maryville close to 3-2 with single runs in the third and fourth, and when Drury scored twice in the fourth to go up 5-2, the Saints countered with a three-run fifth off DU starter
Austin Simms to tie it at 5-5.
But Colombo's RBI single in the sixth scored
John Goodrich for a 6-5 lead, and Goodrich added a two-run triple in the seventh to make it 8-5.Â
Gage Jacobs went 1 2/3 innings to finish things off for his sixth save of the season.
Nick Costantino (1-0) picked up the victory for the Panthers with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless middle-inning relief.
Goodrich was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead DU's 15-hit attack in the nightcap. Williams, Tewes, Wilson, Arthur, Wilmes and Colombo all had two hits each.
"We had lots of young guys make an impact on the games today," Nasby said. "
Justin Abernathy,
Ryan Wadkins,
Austin Simms,
Nick Costantino and
Matthew Tipton all continue to improve and help bridge the gap from what we lost in 2014. Colombo gave us a great start and that helped us get momentum all day long."
Mike Wilkington had five hits, including a homer, and drove in three to lead the Saints, who finished with 13 hits.
Drury returns to GLVC action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Missouri S&T in Rolla, starting at noon.
