Volleyball Panthers Split At Washburn Invitational Saturday To Finish 3-1 In Meet

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Drury volleyball Panthers earned a split sweeping Pittsburg State 3-0 before dropping their match vs. 14th ranked Washburn 3-2 at the Washburn Invitational on Saturday.

Drury is now 3-1 on the season, Pittsburg State falls to 0-3 and Washburn is now 4-0. 

Drury downed Pitt State by scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-6.  Washburn posted a five set victory with scores of 23-25, 20,25,25-15, 25-22 and 15-11.

The Panthers opened with a 25-17 first set victory over Pittsburg State holding PSU to just a .121 hitting percentage.  The second set was played out much like the opening set with the Panthers claiming a 25-20 win and PSU struggling at the net .152.  Drury dominated Pitt. State in the third set 25-6 and hit .364 to claim the sweep and earn their third straight win.

BJ Specht led the Panthers with 12 kills and Brooke Antenen had eight kills, hit .429 and had a team high 15 digs with 23 assists and five block assists.  Chloe Foster hit .500 and recorded seven kills.

Drury hit .287 for the match and held Pittsburg State to just .031 at the net.

In Panthers match vs. Washburn Drury opened with back to back set victories taking the opening set 25-23 and downing the Ichabods 25-20 in set number two.  Washburn stayed alive by posting a 25-15 third set victory over the Panthers.  The Ichabods capped the come from behind win by wins of 25-22 and 15-11. 

Specht who had a career high 20 kills and Antenen each were named to the All-Tournament team.  Timmons finished with 14 kills and Chloe Foster had 10.  Leena Willer had a team high 20 kills for Washburn.

Up next for the Drury Volleyball Panthers will be the Texas A&M-Kingsville Emerald Beach Tournament on September 11-12 in Kingsville, Texas.  Drury will face Bentley at 10 a.m. and Lubbock Christian at 2:30 p.m. in opening day action September 11.
