KANSAS CITY – The Drury women's tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss at Rockhurst in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday.
Drury fell to 13-2 overall, and 0-1 in GLVC play for the year, while the Hawks improved to 8-4, 1-0 GLVC.
Drury kicked off GLVC play by winning two of the three doubles matches against Rockhurst.
JiaQing Mo and
Lara Muller stepped in and played at No. 1, and defeated Emma Schelble and Kim Vrugteveen, 8-2, and
Josephine Jedrychowski and
Chung-Yen Huang dominated with an 8-1 win at No. 3 over Tamara Santos and Justine Berezintsev. Rockhurst scored a doubles point when Janine Koleta and Octavia Malin secured an 8-5 victory over
Arianna Demos and
Larissa Karl at No. 2.
Karl claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top of the lineup, and Huang won in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 for Drury singles wins. Rockhurst was able to sweep the bottom half of the lineup, to go along with a three set win at No. 2 for the 5-4 win. Malin's win of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 over Mo was the deciding point.
Drury will return to GLVC action against William Jewell tomorrow at 2 p.m. Match play will take place at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City.
