Drury Dozen- the top 12 moment's of '19-20: #7- DU volleyball takes down No. 12 Rockhurst

8/3/2020 6:14:00 PM

The Drury Dozen is an annual list of our favorite moments of the year from Drury Athletics. The list is not necessarily the most significant events, but the special games and moments that we'll always associate with 2019-20.

The most significant moment, obviously, came on Mar. 11 when the sports world stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That halt robbed us of games and accomplishments that would have likely taken up several spots on this list.

We can take pride in the fact, however, that even though the year was cut short, what happened between Sept. 1, 2019, and Mar. 10, 2020, provided so many great moments in a variety of sports that it was still difficult to trim the list to just 12.

We'll provide honorable mention selections later in the countdown, but, for now, here is our fourth entry from 2019-20:

#7 – Drury volleyball defeats 12th ranked Rockhurst

Oct. 12, 2019 – Springfield, Mo. (Weiser Gym)

After the program's first NCAA-II national tournament appearance in 2018, a rebuilt Panthers roster fought through some growing pains with a tough early schedule but caught fire when the Great Lakes Valley Conference season started.

On Oct. 12, and with the game at Weiser Gym as the Drury Athletics Auction was set to begin next door in the O'Reilly Family Event Center, the Panthers faced perennial conference and national power Rockhurst. The Hawks were ranked 12th in the nation, and both squads were off to 6-0 league starts.

Drury was impressive from the start. They won the opening set 25-17, but the match was tied after Rockhurst took the second set 25-19. From there, the Panthers dominated winning the third 25-16 and closed out the match 25-20.

Drury recorded 12.5 blocks with eight coming from Makina Wratten while Evan Larsen added another six.

The win gave the Panthers a 13-7 record and sole possession of first place moving them to 7-0 in the league. Rockhurst fell to 16-4 and 6-1.
