Panthers set five team records at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan.– The Drury men's and women's track & field squad completed their third outdoor event of the spring at the 13th Annual David Suenram Gorilla Classic hosted by Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas, on Sunday. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday but pushed back a day due to rain.
 
Drury set five team records, and the women's 4x400 relay team shattered a program mark that had stood for 10 years.
 
Women's Highlights
Ashley Childers had Drury's best finish on Sunday as she came in third in the 200-meter dash. The freshman from Ozark, Arkansas, posted the second-best time in team history posting a 24.84. Childers also tied her own team record in the 100-meter dash as she finished ninth with a time of 12.18.
 
Imani Brown came in fourth in the 400-meter dash, and her time of :57.36 broke a team record she set a week ago. Jacy Rule came in 12th in that event (1:00.60).
 
Lauren Shipley made her 2021 track & field debut and finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. The senior just re-joined the team two weeks after the completion of the 2020-21 basketball season and completed the event in 1:04.72, the second-fasted time in program history.
 
Drury's 4x400 relay team shattered a team record by more than 15 seconds and broke a mark that has stood for 10 years. Shipley, Childers, Rule, and Brown combined for a time of 3:57.46 and finished fourth among nine squads.
 
Anne Wagner was eighth among 19 competitors in the long jump with a leap of 5.24 meters.
 
Men's Highlights
Trevor Johnson set a team record in the 100-meter dash as the sophomore from DeSoto, Missouri, finished seventh among 17 runners. Johnson posted a time of 10.90, breaking a record he set earlier this season. He returned for the 200-meter dash and came in seventh among 32 runners with a time of 21.98.
 
Liam Lynch came in fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore from Springfield and Kickapoo High School had the third-best time in team history, :57.00.
 
Brendan Bena, a junior from Jefferson City, Missouri, gave the Panthers a 10th place finish in a field of 33 competitors in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.62.
 
Drury's 4x400 relay team set a team record and came in seventh among 12 teams. Johnson, Jeremiah Ellison, Matthew Chancia, and Bena combined for a time of 3:27.45.
 
 
The Drury track & field teams compete again on Friday in the Mule Relays hosted by Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
