Throughout the summer, Drury Athletics will reveal the Drury Dozen – over favorite 12 moments from the 2018-19 sports season. The list was voted on by members of the Drury University athletics staff and others that covered DU Athletics.
The list on this countdown does not reflect the most significant moments from the year, although the magnitude of the game or event certainly played a part in our decision.
Ultimately, these were our
favorite moments from the previous year and the ones that we will likely always associate with the 2018-19 Drury sports season.
#5 – Panthers topple #15 Lewis in GLVC semifinals
Drury earned a trip to the NCAA-II tournament as they turned their season around with a 12-game winning streak from January 26 to March 9. The win that may have clinched that bid for the Panthers was their GLVC semifinals win over 15th ranked Lewis.
The Flyers were the top seed in the GLVC tournament but were crushed by the Panthers 93-54 on January 12. At the time, that mid-January win looked like it would jump-start Drury's season, but their launching pad moment would still be a few weeks away (and is #11 on our list).
No one expected the second meeting of the season to go like the first, and the tournament match-up provided Lewis with an opportunity for redemption. The Flyers missed a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but they put Drury's season on the brink building a seven-point lead in overtime. The Panthers ended the game on a 9-0 run, however, and took the lead with 11 seconds remaining on an
Andrew Ballock lay-up. A
Douglas Moore blocked shot then closed out the game sending DU to the championship round.
The win improved Drury's record to 21-10 and provided additional weight to their NCAA tournament resume. The Panthers got their at-large invitation a night later.
