A graduate of Columbia (Mo.) Hickman High School, Joe won All-American honors three of his four years as a member of the Drury men’s diving team. His senior year he won the national championship in both the one and three meter diving events, helping the Panthers to a NAIA national championship. He had a score of 433.8 in the 1-meter and a total of 451.8 in the 3-meter at nationals that season. Joe placed seventh in the three-meter and eighth in the one-meter at the NAIA national meet his junior year and as a sophomore nationals finished third in the three-meter event at the NAIA national meet. The Panthers finished second in the nation in the team standings during Joe’s junior and sophomore seasons. At the time of his graduation from Drury, Joe was the Drury record holder in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 463.95 points and in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 476.75. Both marks were set in 1985. Joe was a highly-touted diver at the prep level. While at Hickman High School, he finished third in the Missouri State Championship in the one-meter diving event.
